The journey into law…
After completing high school and becoming the Dux of his Year 12 HSC, Tan was accepted into the combined Bachelor of Arts (English) and Bachelor of Laws at the University of Sydney which he completed concurrently in 2001.
Tan began to practise in the field of Family Law in 2005 when he was a Junior Lawyer and has continued to remain in this field ever since.
From 2010 until 2021, he worked for an inner-city boutique law firm initially as an Associate but was very quickly promoted to a Senior Associate and practised exclusively in the field of Family Law. During that employment experience, he handled complex parenting matters involving serious allegations of family violence, child abuse, children’s rights, parental contact, residence disputes, relocation matters and recovery of children.
In the field of Family Law, he also handled complex and highly contested property division matters involving large asset pools, Kennon arguments, Section 79A Applications, wastage and add-back arguments, de facto relationship claims, leave to commence property division out of time cases, forensic tracing of hidden assets, Child Support Departure Applications, Binding Financial Agreements, Binding Child Support Agreements, bankruptcy and third party creditor interventions in family law proceedings, Applications for Consent Orders, urgent ex parte Applications and Appeals to the Full Court of the Family Court of Australia based upon errors of law.
Tan joined the Family Law Division of a major law firm in Parramatta in February 2021 as a Senior Associate but was quickly promoted in April 2021 to the role of Special Counsel and the Manager of the Family Law Division of that law firm.
Tan has developed a reputation as being a fierce advocate in family law matters, which are highly complex and highly contested and is so experienced that he can solely appear in most Interim Hearings without the need or assistance of Counsel.
Other areas of expertise
Tan began practising as a solicitor in 2005, initially beginning in the field of migration law in which he successfully handed complex migration law matters pertaining to visa cancellations based on character grounds in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and the Federal Court of Australia. It was also during that time that he also began to practise Family Law.
From 2008 until 2010, he practised exclusively in the field of Personal Injury Law and handled complex common law slip and fall cases as well as medical negligence matters in the District Court of New South Wales and the Supreme Court of New South Wales.
The passion for family law
The field of family law is one which is close to people’s hearts because it pertains to their children and assets which are things people value most in life apart from their health.
