Why Relationship Wellness Matters
Healthy relationships are more than “nice to have” — they’re a proven health asset
Fewer chronic
illnesses
A University of Queensland study tracking 7,600 women for 20 years found those with satisfying relationships in mid-life were significantly less likely to develop multiple chronic conditions later on (news.uq.edu.au).
Body & mind
protection
Reviews of partner responsiveness show that feeling understood and supported predicts better heart health, immune function and sleep quality (sciencedirect.com).
Stress
buffering
Positive daily interactions dampen cortisol and improve mood, while conflict does the reverse. Over time, even small moments of kindness, appreciation, or laughter can strengthen emotional resilience and create a more balanced state of mind.
Australian Snapshot: The Cost of Ignoring Wellness
Burnout, stress, and poor habits carry a price that shows up in family life and in the workplace. At home this looks like mounting fatigue, strained relationships, and higher out-of-pocket care costs. At work it appears as absenteeism, presenteeism, and slipping performance that erodes focus and output.
Statistic
What it Means
Communication breakdown is the #1 cause of divorce (27 % of cases). (couplecounselling.com.au)
Poor dialogue often snowballs into legal separation and financial stress
1 in 8 Australians say their break-up involved violence, abuse or controlling behaviour. (relationships.org.au)
Early support could have prevented escalation for many of these families.
Ongoing high-conflict co-parenting is linked to elevated anxiety and depression in children. (aifs.gov.au)
Managing conflict is a wellness issue, not just a legal one.

Are there quick tools I can use tonight to communicate better, and how do I access them?
Yes. Use Unified Lawyers’ Communication Cheat-Sheet. You will get: ten calming phrases for tense moments, a template for difficult conversations, and a brief reflection checklist after arguments. Print it or save it to your phone, then practise one phrase during your next tricky chat.
Does Medicare cover relationship counselling, and how do rebates or referrals work for couples?
Medicare rebates in Australia are tied to an individual’s Mental Health Treatment Plan from a GP, usually up to ten rebated sessions each year with an eligible clinician. These rebates do not cover couples therapy as a stand-alone service. Some clinicians may include occasional joint sessions when they support the individual’s treatment goals. For couples work, expect private fees, check your private health extras, and consider community providers that use sliding scales.
Is couples therapy right for us, what are the options in Australia, and how do I choose a therapist?
Couples therapy is worth considering if you face recurring fights, growing distance or intimacy problems, breaches of trust, or you want structured skills to communicate better. You can access it through private practice in person or via telehealth, community services with lower fees, and you can pair it with individual therapy when one partner needs extra support. When choosing a therapist, look for experience with your specific issue and a method you feel comfortable with, ask about fees, wait times, and telehealth options, and use the first session to check fit and safety. If cost is a concern, combine each partner’s rebated individual sessions under a GP mental health plan with occasional lower cost couples sessions where available.
