Ethan lives in a sunlit house with a gum tree out front and a backyard just big enough for a trampoline. He is twelve, quick on a maths quiz, shy with strangers, and full of jokes once he trusts you. His dad, Thomas, says Ethan’s laughter can peel the weight off a hard day.

People who meet them do not see how long it took to get here.

When Ethan still tied his shoes in double knots, he saw too many missed birthdays and unanswered questions. Rachel, his mum, once sang him to sleep and called them a team of two, yet her moods shifted without warning. Bottles piled up, curtains stayed closed. Thomas finally left, hoping Rachel would seek help for Ethan’s sake.

For a short time she did. She attended therapy, turned up for a few supervised visits. Thomas remembers watching behind the glass as Rachel tried to hold Ethan’s hand, nervous and shaking. Ethan did not pull away, but he did not smile.

The drinking returned, and with it rage that spilled into late–night voicemails, slurred threats, and lines Thomas still hears: “You will get what is coming.” Ethan overheard one call and chewed his thumbnail until it bled.

The worst moment arrived in 2018. Rachel discovered her own mother had quietly helped Thomas protect Ethan. Rachel tied her mother’s hands and held her overnight, screaming about betrayal. Police charged Rachel with assault, and the case is still listed in the local court. Ethan never saw the violence, thank God.

After that, Thomas applied for sole parental responsibility (also known as custody), which means he alone would make every big decision about Ethan’s life, from school to health care. Rachel did not attend the final hearing, and earlier supervised visits had already broken down.

In court, Thomas produced every report and every dashed hope. Psychologists said Ethan was thriving with his dad. His marks were up, he had joined the rugby team, and he danced around the kitchen when no one watched. Rachel had gone silent, skipped every alcohol test, and her last address was months old. Experts stated that Rachel was going through a relapse.

Ethan’s own words were quieter. In counselling he said he loved his mum “because you are supposed to love your mum,” then paused and added, “Maybe she has had enough chances already.”

The Judge granted Thomas sole parental responsibility (custody) and issued a no-contact order. Rachel would have no calls, no messages, no glimpses on social media of Ethan. If she ever wanted to try again, she would need to prove sobriety and stability through lawyers first.

Thomas told Ethan on a warm evening while they were preparing to cook dinner together.

“She will not be calling anymore,” he said.

Ethan nodded once. “Okay. Can we make burgers tonight?”

That was all.

Thomas seldom retells this story. It lingers instead in how he lowers the news volume when violence appears, how he checks the back door twice before bed. The past hums quietly but so does healing. Ethan races to hug his step-mum Mia after school, laughs loud on the trampoline, and has space to grow whole.
