We’ll help you navigate the Australian legal system without having to explain why Shabbat matters, why your community’s opinion carries weight, or why a civil divorce alone might not be enough. We already get it.

Jessica O’Brien handled my matter which involved drawing up a formal agreement for the division of property post-separation which was filed with the courts. This was done in a highly efficient, very professional and low stress way, minimising costs and time. Jessica is a very kind, warm and empathetic person who genuinely cares. She listens to you carefully and is keen to know what outcomes you wish to achieve and how you want to go about things, consulting with you throughout the whole process. Separation and divorce are invariably highly stressful life events and the way that Jessica handled everything really reduced this stress. Thank you once again, Jessica.

I cannot recommend Mark Youssef and the team at Unified Lawyers highly enough. Going through family law proceedings was one of the most difficult experiences of my life, but having Mark represent me made an enormous difference. Before working with him, I had already been represented by two other lawyers, and the level of support, organisation, strategy, and dedication I received from Mark was truly on another level. From day one, I felt supported and protected. Mark and his team were always responsive, professional, and prepared. No matter how stressful the situation became, I always knew my matter was being handled with care, attention, and genuine commitment. What impressed me most about Mark was not only his strong legal knowledge and courtroom presence, but also how deeply invested he was in achieving the best possible outcome. He is incredibly strategic, detail-oriented, and calm under pressure. Throughout the case, I felt like I had a whole team fighting for me every step of the way.

Frequently Asked Questions About Unified Lawyers
How much does it cost to engage a family lawyer who understands Jewish cultural needs in Australia?
The average cost of engaging a family lawyer will generally be between $300 to $500 plus GST an hour. This rate is usually dependant on the experience of the lawyer.
We know that legal fees are often a cause of stress and even a deciding matter when it comes to engaging a lawyer. This is why we are as transparent as possible when it comes to our costs.
Your first consultation with us is free, and during this consultation you can ask us questions and we can gain an understanding of your situation and your legal needs. We can then provide you with a written cost estimate to resolve your matter.
What should I bring to my first consultation with a culturally aware family solicitor?
Your marriage certificate (civil and Ketubah if you have one), financial records, property documents, and any existing court orders or letters from the other side. If a Get is part of your situation, bring anything related to that as well. The more you can bring upfront, the more useful that first meeting will be.
How does a Get (Jewish religious divorce) interact with Australian family law?
They’re two separate processes and one doesn’t replace the other. You need a civil divorce through the Federal Circuit and Family Court, and you need a Get through the Beth Din. If you want to be divorced under both systems, you’ll need to go through both. We can help you time everything properly so one process doesn’t create problems for the other.
Can my family lawyer help if my spouse is refusing to grant a Get?
Australian courts don’t have direct power over religious divorce. But a refused Get can sometimes be addressed as part of broader negotiations around property or parenting. We understand the pressure and isolation that comes with being an agunah, and we can work with you (and, where appropriate, community leaders) to find a way through.
How do I choose a family solicitor who understands Jewish cultural values?
Look for a firm that has actually worked with Jewish families and understands how Halachic considerations intersect with Australian law. At Unified Lawyers, we’ve handled matters involving custody arrangements around Shabbat and holidays, property settlements that factor in community ties, and the coordination of civil and religious divorce. Ask direct questions in your first meeting. You’ll know pretty quickly whether they get it.
When should I make an appointment to see a family solicitor if I'm considering separation?
Early. Even if you’re not sure yet. Getting legal advice before things escalate gives you clarity about your rights and helps you avoid mistakes that are expensive to fix later. This matters even more when separation carries additional religious and communal weight.
How can I avoid going to court, aligning with Jewish values around Shalom (peace)?
A lot of Jewish families prefer mediation or negotiation over litigation. That aligns well with Shalom Bayit and, frankly, it often gets better results too. We’ll always explore family dispute resolution, collaborative law, and mediation first. Court is a last resort, not a first move. Keeping things out of court also keeps them more private, which matters in close-knit communities.
A note about our team: The lawyers featured on this page may not be members of the Jewish community. They are experienced family lawyers who understand the unique cultural and religious considerations that can arise in Jewish family law matters, including issues related to the get, religious divorce processes, and community expectations. Our priority is that you feel heard, respected, and understood.
